LA CEIBA, HONDURAS / ACCESSWIRE / December 14, 2020 / With just seven countries, Central America isn't a vast place, and yet too often only a few places here get highlighted by travelers. Guatemala is frequently chosen as an adventure tourist destination by backpackers for its Mayan ruins while Belize has become a big cruise destination due to its beautiful beaches and the historic and multicultural downtown of Belize City. But to the south of both these countries lies one that is less talked about but has arguably even more to offer and that country is Honduras.

Honduras Travel & the Beauty of the Bay Islands

Honduras, in general, has a lot to offer the savvy traveler -- and it does so at fantastic rates. Today, you can still get by on less than US $30 per day for food and lodging with even tourist-oriented activities like tour buses and boat outings being well below average rates. We have seen many people choose to simply pass through Honduras on a longer Central American trip wind up staying in the country for weeks on end thanks to in no small part to its affordability meshed with tons of things to do.

Of course, not everyone has weeks to spend exploring every corner of a country and so when it comes to maximizing your Honduras travel plans, consider making the Bay Islands your priority. The Bay Islands is the collective district name given to a series of islands that lie just northwest of mainland Honduras and along with the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. The largest and most popular of these islands are Guanaja, Rotan, and Utila.

The Bay Islands: Honduras Travel Away From the Beaten Central American Path

As noted above, certain parts of Central America have become verifiable tourist traps -- such as with Belize City due to its becoming a premier cruise port. And while there is nothing inherently wrong with tourist traps and even some good reasons to partake in them, there are certainly times when you want to escape that (or you're a person who wants to avoid them altogether) and for that, there is Honduras travel to the Bay Islands.

The three primary islands of the Bay Islands all boast a good mix of lodging and food choices for travelers without being overly touristy. But even more importantly, they offer some of the best water activities in the region.

In Roatan, the largest of the Bay Islands, travelers will find a rich mountainous interior as well as an exciting array of water-oriented activities. Several outstanding outfitters offer breath-taking eco-adventure tours through the jungle canopies and you can complete those tours both by foot and by air via thrilling zip lines. Of course, while those mountain jungle tours are fantastic, the primary reason people choose Roatan is for the snorkeling and diving opportunities as here you are fully surrounded by the second largest barrier reef in the world. Of all the islands, you will find the most superb diving here.

Guanaja is the second-largest island and the least developed of the three primary Bay Islands. The only way to get here is via water taxi, furthering adding to its Honduras travel mystique, and it is also here where you'll find the aptly named End of the World Resort. Guanaja is a must-visit for those wanting to experience beautiful Caribbean beaches that are sparsely populated and who want to meander through authentic Caribbean-styled communities and fishing villages and hike amidst towering pine trees.

Utila is the smallest of the three primary Bay Islands has become a big backpackers destination in recent years thanks to its booming nightlife paired with unique water attractions. For example, this is the best place in the area to swim with whale sharks and its mangrove forests are ideal for kayak exploration. Utila is also hosts the annual Sunjam festival, an underground electronic music event that is renowned in certain musical circles.

The Bay Islands: Safety in Honduras and Greater Central America Travel

Of all these islands, Utila is often cited as the safest for Honduras travel with many backpackers and travelers reporting no issues or worries walking around downtown after dark or traveling the island. When it comes to Honduras travel safety, there are fair concerns regarding travel on the mainland due to drug trafficking gangs, political corruption, and extreme poverty. These, however, are things to be wary of in most areas of Central America and the savvy traveler should always keep safe traveling tips in mind.

That said, Honduras's Bay Islands are considered among the safest places to travel not only in Honduras but in the Central America region as a whole. So if you're looking for a place to experience the beauty and authenticity of Central America but are concerned about feeling safe, then the Bay Islands should be at the top of your travel list.
