114-year-old building has long-standing history of providing affordable housing to seniors

WINTER GARDEN, FL / ACCESS Newswire / September 15, 2026 / NEI General Contracting, an award-winning general contracting firm, announced today its southeast operations have been selected to oversee the rehabilitation of the historic Greenville Summit facility in Greenville, South Carolina. It recently broke ground on the long-time affordable apartment community's first major refresh in many years, and marks NEI's first project in the Palmetto State. The property is owned and managed by JE Properties.

Greenville Summit provides 101 affordable housing units reserved for seniors, and following the approval of a new 20-year Affordable Housing Special Tax Assessment, the $10 million renovation project was able to move forward. The renovations will focus on replacing the existing kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, and windows in the units, while also installing new HVAC units. Given the historic nature of the building, NEI's team will also restore the historic cornice and repoint brickwork. Funding for the project comes from a combination of federal, state and local partners including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), SC Housing, and the City of Greenville.

"JE Properties is excited to be working with NEI, whose tireless efforts, in partnership with HUD, SC Housing, the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office, and the City of Greenville, were instrumental in moving this project forward to improve the lives of our senior residents. This project will preserve both the long-term affordability and the historic character of Greenville's first skyscraper in the heart of downtown." said Joseph Eddy, President of JE Properties.

NEI has steadily expanded its footprint in recent years under the leadership of company president Josef F. Rettman. From New England to Texas, its teams are counted on to upgrade and rehabilitate affordable housing properties for families, senior citizens, and countless other populations. Given its commitment to workforce development and creating communities for people of all backgrounds to call home, it's fitting that the company's first project in the state focuses on improving the quality of life of an increasingly vulnerable population, wherein 90 percent of current residents of Greenville Summit earn below 30 percent of the area median income.

"NEI is pleased to work with JE Properties and the residents of Greenville Summit to create a welcoming environment to call home with the start of this thoughtful renovation and restoration project," said Josef Rettman, President, NEI. "We understand on an intimate level how critical it is to provide affordable, healthy housing for our nation's older adult populations, and we're incredibly proud to have our first project in South Carolina be one that will add stability and comfort to the lives of its senior citizens."
