Why do visions of heaven, hell, good and evil endure-and what might they reveal about the conflicts within us?
TUCSON, AZ / ACCESS Newswire / September 3, 2026 / For thousands of years, people have imagined heaven and hell, angels and demons, and an eternal struggle between good and evil. They have painted them on cathedral walls, carved them in stone, written them into sacred texts and passed their stories from one generation to the next.
But why?
What is it about these images of peace and suffering that continues to capture the human imagination?
Perhaps it begins with something familiar: We suffer, we struggle and we want peace.
Yet why do we suffer and how do we find peace? Why do we desire things that sometimes hurt us? Why do we hurt one another? Why do we struggle with our own thoughts, emotions and actions? And why, generation after generation, do many of the same conflicts reappear in our families, societies and cultures?
Wars, political divisions, religious disagreements and competing ideologies have shaped human history. At the same time, stories, books, films, television, cartoons and video games repeatedly return to the same themes of good versus evil, conflict and resolution.
The cycle has endured, and so have the stories we tell about it. Throughout history, images have given rise to stories that help people make sense of what is difficult to see or explain. Good and evil become characters. Inner conflict becomes a battle. The unknown becomes a place. Something invisible becomes something we can imagine-and possibly begin to understand.
These questions are at the heart of The War in Heaven, a black-and-white graphic novel by Arizona artist, author and educator Mano Sotelo. The story follows two brothers-one driven by indulgence and control, the other longing for peace and clarity-on a transformative journey through addiction, fear, anger and desire.
"Human beings have always used images and stories to confront what we don't fully understand," Sotelo said. "We may not have answers to every question about suffering, desire, morality or what lies beyond our experience. But we can create stories that give those questions a form we can see and consider. In doing so, we can step back from our experiences, think critically about them and make choices about how we respond."
Those questions have also shaped Sotelo's research and presentations. Over the past two years, he has presented related work at Harvard Divinity School, Oxford and international academic gatherings in Athens and Rome. His presentations have examined how visual art and religious storytelling can help people make meaning, connect personal experience with the sacred, and find belonging through shared stories and images.
Across cultures and centuries, visions of heaven and hell have taken many forms. Their persistence raises a more personal question: What might these stories reveal about what each of us hopes for, fears, struggles against and seeks in our own lives?
The War in Heaven was published by MindStir Media in April 2025 and is available in paperback and ebook formats.
Sotelo is a visual artist and author who has taught in higher education for more than 20 years. He currently serves as a Visual Arts faculty member at Pima Community College in Arizona. His work explores belief systems through mythology, spirituality, philosophy and psychology and has been exhibited at museums across the United States, including the Haggin Museum, Tampa Museum of Art and Tucson Museum of Art.
