Award-winning digital company Purple Frog Systems helps companies improve the way they manage their data.

SHROPSHIRE, UK / ACCESSWIRE / September 7, 2022 / These days it can be challenging to achieve a work-life balance. But it's something we all crave. In fact new research shows that more workers are attracted to their current role for work-life balance than the salary.

With this in mind, award-winning UK-based digital company Purple Frog Systems is encouraging its employees to take time out from being plugged in, in order to learn a new skill or hobby.

HR director, Hollie Whittles, who has a background in corporate business, says: "We wanted to create a people-centric company culture where employees are encouraged to take time out to learn.

"Part of the challenge is that they work in technology so by their nature they are using screens and devices constantly and are always plugged in."

Hollie started thinking about how employees could create more work-life balance and inject more joy into their lives.

Personally, she has always played musical instruments as much as possible outside of her corporate work - she's a woodwind player specializing in clarinet, saxophone, flute and piano. She plays regularly in orchestras, chamber ensembles, musical theater pit bands and gives solo recitals.

Through her experience of blending her passion for music with running her own company, she has shared her thoughts on how utilizing the arts can not only benefit your mind but also your business, and has even given a TEDx Talk on the subject.

She believes the skills that are learnt in music such as communication, team working, listening, coordination, multi-tasking, resilience, confidence to perform and many more are all needed to be successful in business.

There are also scientific studies that correlate playing a musical instrument with cognitive development, higher IQ and improvements in core academic subject results.

In fact music can benefit us in many ways in the workplace:

  • Music releases feel-good endorphins so listen to music to overcome negative emotions
  • Learning to play an instrument teaches you how to handle pressure and resilience
  • Try listening to a powerful piece of music such as the theme from Superman by John Williams to help you feel invincible
  • You can use music to tune out the chatter of the world around you in a busy office to help you become more productive and focussed

Hollie recently shared her personal story of how music helped her find joy in her business life in the bestselling book Creating Joy: Changemakers Share Wisdom, Rituals & Practices For Living A Joy-Filled Life. The book hit multiple number 1 spots on the Amazon bestseller lists when it was published.

She says: "The joy I feel from performing music has helped me to combat things like depression, digital overwhelm and too many notifications on my smartphone. In a world where people are struggling with tech overload, increased anxiety and failed world life balance, music can bring balance. Music also transcends language, race, religion, and brings people together. It triggers those feel-good endorphins. In general, it brings joy!"
