WILMINGTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / June 16, 2022 / The Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP) is pleased to announce that Dr. Scott Hambleton's two-year term as President began following the FSPHP's 2022 Annual Meeting. He succeeds Dr. Chris Bundy who will continue to serve FSPHP in a leadership role on its Board of Directors in the role of Past President for a two-year term.
Scott L. Hambleton, MD, DFASAM is a 1994 graduate of the University of Tennessee School of Medicine. He completed the University of Florida Addiction Medicine Fellowship at Pine Grove Behavioral Health in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 2007. Dr. Hambleton has served as President of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Hambleton is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and the American Board of Preventative Medicine in Addiction Medicine. He is a Distinguished Fellow in the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and a certified Medical Review Officer. Dr. Hambleton served as Medical Director of the Mississippi Physician Health Program from 2010-2021 and currently serves as Chair of the Mississippi Physician Health Committee. In 2021, Dr. Hambleton became a Health Plan Medical Director for Molina Healthcare of Mississippi.
Dr. Hambleton has been a member of the FSPHP since 2010. He was quickly identified as an emerging leader in his field and elected to the FSPHP Board of Directors in 2012 or 2013. He has volunteered his leadership and expertise on numerous FSPHP Committees included the FSPHP Program Planning Committee, chair and now a member of the Public Policy Committee, co- chair of the ARC, and the MAT Advisory Panel.

During his term, Dr. Hambleton pledges to continue to grow and develop the FSPHP to meet the evolving needs of its member Physician Health Programs (PHPs) and stakeholders through these goals:
- Deployment of the Performance Enhancement and Effectiveness Review program for PHP'S (PEER™) and Evaluation and Treatment Accreditation (FSPHP-ETA™) program for providers specializing in physician health to the field is our most important organizational priority, successfully demonstrating our commitment to accountability, consistency, and excellence.
The PEER™ program mission is to empower PHPs and other health programs for workers in safety-sensitive occupational roles to use the updated FSPHP Guidelines as a practical tool for identifying opportunities to optimize performance and effectiveness in alignment with best practices.
The FSPHP-ETA™ program mission is to recognize evaluation and treatment services that are qualified to specialize in the care of medical students, residents, career physicians, and other safety-sensitive professionals, through a valid, reliable, and rational assessment process that demonstrates compliance with objective standards. - Amplify outreach opportunities to disseminate knowledge of PHP services
- Expand member benefits and strengthen partnerships with shareholders to support Physician Health Programs.
About FSPHP: The FSPHP evolved over 30 years ago from initiatives taken by the American Medical Association, the Federation of State Medical Boards, and state medical societies. PHPs serve as a safe, confidential resource for the profession focusing on outreach, education, and health monitoring for physicians at risk for impairment. Today, nearly every state has developed a PHP which operates within the parameters of state regulation and legislation.
PHPs have extensive expertise in monitoring and managing safety sensitive professionals, including physicians who have recovered from a substance use disorder. Studies that review the long-term model of PHPs confirm physician recovery rates are markedly higher than the general population-even when extended into 5 years or more. One study reports that malpractice risk for those who complete a PHP is lower than for physicians practicing medicine who have never been followed by PHP monitoring.
