Diving into the current mission of The Artist's Palette Salon, which aims to connect communities and encourage healing during difficult times
SMITHSBURG, MD / ACCESSWIRE / October 6, 2023 / According to CNN, a recent meeting of US Surgeon Generals concluded that the mental health crisis in the United States is so bad that it can affect democracy. CNN goes on to state, "In 2022 alone, nearly 50,000 people died by suicide in the US, an increase of about 2.6% from the year before.
Mental Health America corroborates those findings; their studies find that millions of adults in the U.S. experience serious thoughts of suicide, with over 12.1 million individuals reporting serious thoughts of suicide.
The mental health crisis alone is not the only issue; the reason the crisis keeps growing is because there are not enough mental healthcare providers to serve everyone who needs help. Mental Health America says that almost a third (28.2%) of all adults with a mental illness reported that they are not able to receive the treatment they need.
In the Smithsonian Magazine article, "How Making Art Helps Improve Mental Health," research has found that making art can activate reward pathways in the brain, reduce stress, lower anxiety levels, and improve mood.
People are looking for non-traditional solutions to the mental health crisis, and several groundbreaking solutions are popping up across the country. One such solution is being provided by the Artist Palette Hair Salon and Gallery. This salon and gallery offers more than just the typical salon services; the purpose of this establishment is to help fight the mental health crisis, as it is a haven for those seeking not only physical transformation but also a mental and emotional rejuvenation.

The Artist's Palette founder, Jamie Fogle, created the salon and gallery after experiencing mental health issues of her own. In her younger years, Fogle was sexually assaulted multiple times by someone close to her; the event made her extremely shy, afraid of speaking up, and it even impacted her dreams for the future, causing her to drop out of beauty school the first time around. Later, Fogle went back and completed her schooling, and found that her personal struggles fortified her commitment to helping others overcome their struggles by promoting happiness and balance through self-care and artistic expression.
Fogle launched The Artist's Palette to connect communities through art, by encouraging collaboration and by inspiring each person to nurture their creative side in order to promote balance and prosperity to all.
"What we do on a daily basis is listen, encourage, and make our clients feel beautiful. We offer a safe space to communicate freely about their feelings as well as how engaging in the arts can positively impact your health and wellbeing," said Fogle.
According to Psychology Today, there is a connection between self-care and mental health, and taking care of oneself supports mental health and fitness. The Artist Palette allows people to do both: take care of their appearance and access their creative side.
Looking ahead, The Artist's Palette has ambitious plans. They aspire to expand their unique concept to other communities, sharing their vision of holistic well-being and art with a wider audience. Additionally, they have launched a scholarship fund to ensure that aspiring artists can pursue their dreams. Moreover, art classes tailored for individuals with autism are on the horizon, demonstrating the salon's commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.
The mental health crisis in America requires fresh, innovative thinking to address the lack of access to care. With the severe shortage of mental healthcare professionals, we cannot rely solely on traditional treatment models. It is imperative that we get creative and design new systems and approaches that increase availability of services. Exploring alternative options that can supplement standard care will be essential. By thinking outside the box, we can discover ways to deliver meaningful mental health support to more people. Though the specific solutions are unclear, the value of pioneering imaginative ideas is evident. We must be open-minded in order to adequately confront the challenges at hand.
