Merland follows Mere, an eighteen-year-old aquarium worker who discovers she is the exiled queen of a hidden undersea kingdom after her parents disappear and she becomes the target of two Great White sharks. Guided by a disguised Mer warrior named Hunter, she must learn to navigate an underwater world of political intrigue and magic while deciding whether to claim a throne or remain in the only life she has known.
The novel is self-published by Hillary and marks the author's entry into the contemporary fantasy genre, joining a category that includes titles such as A Song Below Water and The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea.
