Los Angeles physician discusses how broader medical expertise can help address the complex needs of kidney patients.
LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESS Newswire / August 24, 2026 / Kidney disease can involve health challenges that extend beyond the kidneys themselves. Feliciano Serrano, MD, a Los Angeles physician with training in nephrology and vascular interventions, believes this connection highlights the value of looking at complex patient needs from a broader perspective.
Serrano's interest in that relationship developed while specializing in nephrology and hypertension at the University of Vermont School of Medicine. During an NIH-supported research fellowship, he studied thrombosis and platelet dysfunction in kidney disease. His work also explored cardiovascular concerns affecting renal patients and later included research and lecturing at Harvard Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Those experiences encouraged Serrano to expand his expertise beyond kidney medicine. He later completed fellowship training in Interventional Nephrology and Vascular Procedures through the University of Arizona College of Medicine and AKDHC.
"People's health and wellbeing take priority or precedence always. Everything else comes second," Serrano said. For him, pursuing additional training was one way to develop more tools for treating patients facing complicated medical conditions.
Looking Beyond a Single Specialty
Serrano's career reflects a broader philosophy about medical improvement. He believes physicians should continually evaluate their methods rather than focus only on individual outcomes.
"You measure success by perfecting the mechanism and not by simply assessing outcomes," Serrano said. "If you do things right and improve on these methods, eventually you will achieve favorable outcomes."
That willingness to reconsider established methods has influenced Serrano throughout his career. He recalls facing scrutiny after helping pioneer a different approach to dialysis care when the methodology was considered unconventional. According to Serrano, the approach became an accepted method of care roughly a decade later.
The experience reinforced his belief that physicians should remain open to responsible change while continuing to learn from research, colleagues and clinical experience.
Bringing Specialized Care Back to Los Angeles
Serrano eventually brought his nephrology and vascular experience back to the community where he was raised. Since 2009, his work at Serrano Kidney & Vascular Access Center has focused on caring for nephrology and vascular patients in the Los Angeles area.
His commitment also extends to patients who may face barriers to care. Serrano reports receiving two City of Los Angeles awards recognizing substantial pro bono medical services for underserved and homeless populations.
For Serrano, leadership in medicine ultimately comes down to improvement rather than titles. He emphasizes collaboration, patient well-being, and continually raising the standard of his own work.
"The goal of every day is to simply be better than yesterday," Serrano said.
