Photography News: Panasonic Has Introduced a Stills-focused Micro Four Thirds Camera, the DC-G9, Along with the Super Telephoto Leica DG Elmarit 200mm f/2.8 POWER O.I.S. Lens

Adept in all arenas, this camera's strong suits lie in the 20.3MP MOS sensor, new 80MP multi-shot mode, fast autofocus performance, and weather-sealed design. Complementing the G9's specs is an equally impressive Leica DG Elmarit 200mm f/2.8 POWER O.I.S. lens. This 400mm equivalent super telephoto is distinguished by its fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, advanced optical design, and inclusion of the DMW-TC141.4x Teleconverter to further extend its reach.

The Panasonic DC-G9 is a sleek Micro Four Thirds camera revolving around the 20.3MP Live MOS sensor, which was first featured in the high-end GX8 and GH5 cameras. This sensor omits the optical low-pass filter for a high degree of sharpness, and works in conjunction with an updated Venus Engine image processor to avail sensitivities to ISO 25600, fast shooting at 12 fps with a mechanical shutter, and up to 60 fps shooting with an electronic shutter. UHD 4K 60p video recording is also supported, as well as Full HD 180p, and this video performance allows for 6K PHOTO at 30 fps and 4K PHOTO at 60 fps. Benefitting the fast shooting speeds, a refined DFD autofocus system is also capable of acquiring focus in as little as 0.04 sec with a broad 225-area focusing system.
The sensor is benefited by an advanced sensor-shift image stabilization system, and Dual I.S. technology, to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to six stops for sharper handheld shooting. This stabilization system also facilitates an 80MP High-Resolution Shot mode, which composites sequential exposures to produce an immensely detailed file with greater color depth than a single exposure can capture.
Distinguishing itself within Panasonic's mirrorless lineup, the G9 also omits one of the top dials in favor of a top status LCD panel for quickly reviewing your shooting settings akin to how professional DSLRs are configured. Ideal for stills shooters, a new 0.83x-magnification OLED EVF is featured, and has a 3.68m-dot resolution and 120 fps refresh rate for bright and natural eye-level viewing. The G9 also has a rear 3.0'' 1.04m-dot free-angle touchscreen LCD, a joystick for intuitive focus area control, dual UHS-II SD memory card slots, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Additionally, the body is fully weather-sealed and freeze proof for use in harsh weather.
In addition to the camera, Panasonic is also debuting its first super-telephoto prime, the Panasonic Leica DG Elmarit 200mm f/2.8 POWER O.I.S. lens. This 400mm equivalent lens is characterized by its bright f/2.8 maximum aperture along with an optical design featuring two Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion elements to reduce aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity. A Nano Surface Coat also helps to control lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting. Besides its optical attributes, the lens also features POWER O.I.S. to control shake for sharper results, and works in conjunction with the G9's Dual I.S. technology to limit up to six stops of camera shake. A triple linear motor realizes fast, quiet, and smooth autofocus performance, to benefit stills and video, and has focus limiter and focus memory controls for faster, more intuitive shooting with moving and distant subjects. Additionally, like the camera body, the lens is fully weather-sealed.

Included with the lens is the DMW-TC14 1.4x Teleconverter, which extends the effective focal length to 560mm with one stop loss in brightness. For even greater reach, the Panasonic DMW-202x Teleconverter is available separately to produce an effective 800mm equivalent focal length with two stops loss in brightness. Both teleconverters maintain full autofocus performance and image stabilization when used with the new 200mm f/2.8 lens.
