SCOTTSDALE, AZ / ACCESS Newswire / July 29, 2026 / Tom Pernice Jr. is encouraging people to rethink what it means to stay competitive. After more than four decades in professional golf, Pernice believes lasting success comes from continuing to learn, adapt, and improve, no matter your age.
Tom Pernice Jr. has spent more than forty years competing at the highest levels of golf, but he believes the most important lessons from his career extend far beyond the course. His message is simple but powerful: stay curious, keep growing, and never stop competing with yourself.
A two-time PGA TOUR winner and six-time PGA TOUR Champions winner, Pernice has competed against generations of the world's best and built a career defined by consistency and perseverance. He has made more than 300 cuts, earned more than $15 million in career earnings, and was inducted into the Kansas City Golf Hall of Fame in 2024.
"Success is about giving your best every day and maintaining integrity throughout the journey," says Pernice. "Winning is rewarding, but real success comes from consistency, resilience, and positively impacting others."
His philosophy is backed by science. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, yet fewer than one in four meet both the recommended aerobic and muscle strengthening guidelines. Pernice believes staying active is one of the best ways to protect your health and maintain focus over time.
Pernice's career is a perfect example of adaptation. After turning 50, he joined PGA TOUR Champions and went on to win six tournaments, including the 2014 Charles Schwab Cup Championship. He credits his longevity to embracing change. From refining his swing and improving nutrition to using modern training and technology, he continues to invest in every area that helps him perform.
"Golf is a lifelong learning process," he says. "I continue studying the game, learning from fellow professionals, and embracing new technologies and training methods."
"Every missed cut or disappointing tournament became an opportunity to evaluate what needed improvement," he says. "Those moments often became the biggest catalysts for future success."
"Family provides perspective and balance," he says. "Having meaningful relationships away from competition makes me a better competitor and a happier person overall."
Off the course, Pernice has helped raise millions of dollars for retinal disease research through the Foundation Fighting Blindness alongside his daughter Brooke, who was born with Leber's congenital amaurosis. He also supports organizations including First Tee, Folds of Honor, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Pernice hopes more people recognize that staying competitive does not require playing professional sports. It means continuing to challenge yourself, staying active, learning from setbacks, and finding ways to make a positive impact.
"Success is not measured solely by trophies," he says. "It is measured by whether I competed with integrity, represented myself well, and continued improving."
What You Can Do
You do not need to be a professional athlete to build a competitive mindset. Tom Pernice Jr. encourages people to stay physically active, focus on steady progress rather than quick results, learn from setbacks, and encourage others along the way.
Small, consistent actions often create the greatest results. Whether through sports, work, or everyday life, growth comes from committing to become better today than you were yesterday.
About Staying Active for Life
Regular physical activity, lifelong learning, and strong social connections are linked to healthier aging and improved well-being. Building consistent habits can help people remain active, resilient, and engaged throughout every stage of life.
