UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OKUNIKKO - the brand's third location, following two acclaimed hotels in Hokkaido - opens August 8 around one of Japan's most concentrated natural sulfur hot springs.

TOKYO, JP / ACCESS Newswire / July 14, 2026 / Popular Japanese real estate developer Global Agents Co., Ltd. today announced that UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OKUNIKKO, the newest addition to its LIVELY HOTELS portfolio, will open on August 8, 2026, in Nikko National Park. The property is a full renovation of Okunikko Konishi Hotel, a hot spring hotel that has welcomed travelers to Nikko's Yumoto Onsen since 1959. Reservations are now open through the hotel's official website, with rooms from ¥20,000 per night.

Known for blending boutique design with relaxed hospitality, UNWIND HOTEL & BAR currently operates two properties in Hokkaido - in Sapporo and Otaru. The new Okunikko location brings the brand's signature approach to one of Japan's most scenic national parks, centered around a source-fed sulfur hot spring recognized as one of the country's most concentrated.

Guests reach the hotel by climbing the winding Iroha-zaka mountain road, passing Lake Chuzenji and the wetlands of Senjogahara before arriving at Okunikko Yumoto Onsen, a hot spring town nearly 1,500 meters above sea level. Surrounded by forests, waterfalls and volcanic landscapes, the area is a quieter, less-visited side of Nikko National Park. Lake Yunoko sits a short walk from the hotel, where guests can also join guided nature walks along its shoreline.

At the heart of the experience is the hotel's natural hot spring. UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OKUNIKKO draws directly from Yumoto Onsen's sulfur spring - said to be among the most concentrated in Japan - and serves the water exactly as it emerges from the source, without added water, reheating or recirculation. As the mineral-rich water reacts with the air, its color shifts from milky white to shades of emerald green. The open-air bath is built from stone quarried from nearby Mt. Nantai, one of Nikko's most iconic peaks. In the open-air bath, guests can gaze up at the star-filled sky of Oku-Nikko for a truly relaxing experience.

Rather than recreating a traditional ryokan, the renovation preserves the property's long history while introducing UNWIND HOTEL & BAR's contemporary design philosophy. Inspired by mid-century aesthetics and the surrounding forest, the interiors combine vintage furniture, natural materials and expansive windows overlooking the landscape. A fireplace anchors the dining room, creating the atmosphere of a mountain lodge throughout the seasons.

Dinner at Forest Lodge Dining features grilled and roasted dishes inspired by the warmth of a forest retreat, while breakfast at Forest Morning Table pairs fresh bread and seasonal ingredients with panoramic woodland views. In the evening, guests can also enjoy complimentary drinks at the hotel's bar as part of a light all-inclusive service.

The hotel offers 46 guestrooms across three categories - king, twin and four-bed - each approximately 35 square meters and facing the forest. Modeled on mid-century studies and bedrooms, the rooms are designed for both quiet reading hours and deep rest. Four-bed rooms accommodate up to six guests, suited to families and groups exploring Nikko together.

"As we looked to this property's future, the goal was never simply to renovate a historic hotel," said Takeshi Yamasaki, CEO of Global Agents. "Sixty-seven years of travelers soaked in this spring before us. Our role was to preserve its legacy while creating an experience worthy of the next generation of guests."

Nikko's UNESCO-listed shrines and temples, at the base of the mountains, draw heavy visitor traffic year-round. Okunikko, roughly an hour further into the national park, sees far fewer international travelers despite sitting inside the same protected landscape - a gap UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OKUNIKKO is positioned to close.

UNWIND HOTEL & BAR launched in Sapporo in 2017 before expanding to Otaru in 2019, transforming a landmark 1931 building that was Hokkaido's first hotel built to accommodate foreign guests. Okunikko marks the brand's third property. Global Agents operates 13 hotels and roughly 1,200 rooms across Japan under its LIVELY HOTELS portfolio, alongside 50 Social Apartment co-living residences totaling around 3,000 rooms.
