New plant pot uses Kresling-style origami geometry to move between seed-starting, propagation and planter configurations.

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND / ACCESS Newswire / July 1, 2026 / POTR, the Scottish product design company, today announced the launch of POTR Helix, a self-watering plant pot with an expandable origami structure. The product is being introduced through Kickstarter and reached its funding goal within 24 minutes of launch.

Helix is a modular growing system developed for seed germination, propagation, herbs, houseplants and climbing plant varieties. The product is being introduced through Kickstarter, with fulfillment expected from October 2026.

The product uses Kresling-style origami geometry, a folded cylindrical structure, inspired by NASA's exploration of its use for deployable space structures, where compact forms are designed to unfold or expand after launch. POTR applied similar folding principles to a plant pot format that can move between different growing configurations.

Most plant pots are designed for a fixed size or single stage of use. Seeds, cuttings and established plants often require different containers, supports or accessories as they develop. Helix was developed as a modular system that can be adjusted over time as growing volume requirements change.

The product includes a concealed water reservoir in the base and a capillary-action wick that draws water into the soil. Depending on the plant type and indoor conditions, the system can provide water for up to two weeks between refills.

The wider Helix system includes interchangeable accessories for different growing uses. The Sprout growing plate is designed for seed germination and herbs, while the Sprigg propagation plate is designed for plant cuttings. An expandable trellis accessory can also be added for climbing plant varieties.

The launch comes as home growing continues to shift indoors and into smaller living spaces. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 80% of the U.S. population lived in urban areas at the 2020 Census, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors.

"Most growing products are designed for a single moment in a plant's life," said Andrew Flynn, co-founder of POTR. "We wanted to create a system that could adapt alongside both the plant and the person growing it. Helix brings together years of research into origami engineering, self-watering systems and sustainable manufacturing to create a more flexible way to grow at home."

Helix ships flat-packed and is made from recycled materials. The format is designed to reduce packaging volume, storage requirements and transportation space while creating a product that can be used across multiple growing stages.
