As social media faces growing scrutiny, a new platform offers a different model

EAGAN, MN / ACCESS Newswire / April 14, 2026 / The conversation around social media has shifted dramatically in recent years.

Juries in New Mexico and California found Meta liable for addictive design and failing to protect children on its platforms. Attorneys general across the United States have raised concerns about how major platforms are designed to maximize engagement. Digital rights organizations have criticized policy changes at major platforms for reducing protections for women and marginalized communities. Meanwhile the business model powering it all remains unchanged: user attention and personal data are the product, and advertisers are the customer.

We have seen what happens when people want out. BlueSky and Mastodon have successfully pulled millions of users away from the platform previously known as Twitter. But no serious alternative to Facebook and Instagram has emerged -- the platforms where most people actually live their social lives online. Until now.

What would a healthier alternative look like? No advertising. No algorithm deciding what you see. No bots. No AI accounts. No selling of personal data. Feeds that are chronological. Moderation designed to protect the most vulnerable members of a community. A business model built around people paying for a product they actually want.

That platform now exists. A lone immigrant, working nights and weekends in Minnesota, motivated by what he watched social media become, launched it earlier this year. It is called theLove.

Research from Twingate and other independent sources consistently shows that a significant portion of social media users say they would pay a small monthly fee for an ad-free, privacy-respecting experience. The question was never whether the demand existed. The question was whether anyone would build it.

Someone did. The only question left is whether we are willing to pay for healthier social networking.
