Thousands of scholarship providers have sent awards directly to U.S. colleges and universities through the student-centered Backpack platform - getting funds to students faster and with bank-grade security and compliance.
NEW YORK, NY / ACCESS Newswire / May 1, 2026 / Backpack Payment Technologies, the financial infrastructure platform purpose-built for higher education, today announced the official launch of the Backpack Payments Network - the largest digital disbursement network for scholarships in the United States*. Thousands of scholarship providers have used Backpack to send digital, auto-reconciled scholarship payments to colleges and universities, replacing the paper-check workflow that has defined scholarship disbursement for decades.
The milestone arrives around National College Decision Day, when millions of students across the country commit to the college they will attend in the fall and the work of moving scholarship dollars to their tuition accounts begins in earnest.
Backpack is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services are provided by OMB Bank, Member FDIC.
Built around the student
Scholarship payments are unlike any other financial transaction: every dollar is tied to a specific student, a specific institution, and a specific term, and every dollar is supposed to translate into something that actually shows up on a tuition statement. Existing rails were not built for that. Paper checks, lockboxes, and rekeyed remittance data introduce friction at every step - and it is the student who pays the cost in delayed aid, missed deadlines, and uncertainty over whether their award has been applied.
Backpack was built the other way around. Every payment on the network carries the student-level metadata required to apply it to the correct account on day one, reducing the need for manual matching and follow-up emails. The student is not an attachment to the payment; the student is the payment.
Faster time to funds
Where the legacy workflow is measured in weeks - print, sign, mail, deliver, open, identify, post, reconcile - Backpack is measured in hours. Providers initiate payments digitally, universities receive them with full student-level detail, and allow universities to post credits to the student accounts in days.
When a partner Provider is paying a partner University on the Backpack network; payments can be instant!
That speed compounds across an academic calendar. Scholarships meet tuition deadlines instead of trailing them. Students avoid late fees, registration holds, and the anxiety of not knowing whether their aid has landed. Financial aid offices reclaim the staff hours that used to be spent chasing missing checks.
Security and compliance, end to end
Moving scholarship dollars at scale demands more than speed. Backpack's network is purpose-built around the security and compliance posture higher education requires:
Bank-grade infrastructure for funds movement, eliminating checks in transit and the lost-mail, signature, and check-fraud risks that come with them.
Verified counterparties on both sides - providers and institutions are identity-verified before they can send or receive on the network.
Auditable, student-level reconciliation so every payment has a clear chain of custody from provider intent to credit posted.
Single-platform reporting for both universities and scholarship providers - no separate third-party reporting workflow, no rekeying, and fewer reconciliation gaps.
The only network built for both sides
Backpack is the only platform that provides banking capabilities for both universities and scholarship providers, enabling direct provider-to-institution settlement, end-to-end reconciliation, and student-level reporting in a single environment. Most existing solutions address only one side of the workflow, leaving the other to absorb the cost of rekeying, lookups, and exception handling - and leaving the student in the middle.
We are lucky enough to have amazing university partners like The University of Alabama, The University of Chicago, Miami University and many more that are innovating for their students. That is complemented with our partners on the scholarship side - leading foundations like The Coca-Cola Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters - Central Texas, American Savings Foundation, Piqua Community Foundation and many more.
From the founder
"Scholarship money has always been the last paper check in higher education. Well-intentioned providers send awards off into the postal system every year and just hope they reach the right student account in time. We built Backpack to put the student back at the center of that transaction - funds arrive in days instead of weeks, every payment is supported by our bank-grade encryption and compliance program, and providers and universities finally see exactly where every dollar lands.
Becoming the largest online outside scholarship payments network in the country is a milestone, but the work we care about is what it makes possible for students. We have barely made a dent in our broader mission to unlock hundreds of millions of extra funding dollars for students through payment and operational efficiencies."
- Callum Bedos, Founder & CEO, Backpack Payment Technologies
From a scholarship provider partner
"Backpack has finally given us an opportunity to move away from paper checks as a smaller organization - transforming our payment operations. We are so excited to take advantage of this upgrade and the benefits it brings to our scholars, staff, and supporting universities".
- Heather Hokusen, Senior Program Officer, American Savings Foundation
Why now
We are officially launching the Backpack Payments Network to the world in conjunction with Decision Day (May 1st), which marks the deadline by which most U.S. students commit to the college they will attend. Over the following months, billions of dollars in scholarship distributions will move through the higher-education system to fund the incoming class.
Backpack's network is live, integrated with colleges and universities across the country, and ready to carry that volume - securely, electronically, and on a timeline that actually matches the academic calendar.
