PRIDES CROSSING, MA / ACCESS Newswire / May 18, 2026 / Marquis Who's Who is proud to honor Dr. Kathleen Barnes for her distinguished contributions to education, healthcare, higher education leadership and pediatric physical therapy. This recognition reflects a career defined by service, innovation, resilience and a consistent commitment to improving the lives of students, patients and institutions. Her journey continues to inspire students, colleagues and communities alike.

Speaking with Marquis Who's Who, Dr. Barnes described her career as "eclectic," which she believes makes her unique "It's all about my journey. I began as a therapist, then became an educator, and later an administrator," she said. Though she has not practiced as a physical therapist for some time, she remains deeply shaped by that background. Her transition into higher education, she explained, was a natural progression from a career built around teaching, guiding and helping others build strength, confidence and independence.
Dr. Barnes is president and founder of K.H. Barnes Advisory Services, established in 2020, through which she provides strategic consulting and guidance in higher education. In 2021, she became a member of the Registry, the gold standard for interim placement. From 2021 to 2025, she served as interim provost at Neumann University, supporting academic affairs and institutional advancement during a period of transition.
Before that, Dr. Barnes served as interim provost of Endicott College from 2019 to 2020 and as the sixth president of Endicott College from 2018 to 2019. Her appointment as president followed the passing of the previous president, requiring her to guide the institution through change with steadiness, care and institutional knowledge.
Her leadership at Endicott College spanned many roles, including serving as senior vice president, dean of the Division of Academic Success, and teaching as a full professor from 2006 to 2018. In that work, Dr. Barnes oversaw tutoring services, retention initiatives and support for students requiring medical accommodations. She mentioned to Marquis Who's Who that her positive influence on campus culture was so strong that the college president often referred to her as "the dean of happiness."
Dr. Barnes' earlier academic leadership included stints as the acting dean and the assistant dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, along with roles as the director and the coordinator of clinical education for the physical therapist assistant program. She was instrumental in helping Endicott transition from offering two-year degrees to four-year degrees, a major institutional shift that aligned with evolving educational standards and helped shape the college's academic future.
Before entering higher education, Dr. Barnes built a pioneering career in pediatric physical therapy. She worked in private practice, holding positions at Northshore Education Consortium, Meeting Street School and Bellevue Healthcare. She also held management roles with CAST Inc., where she contributed to rehabilitative engineering clinics and early developments in universal design and assistive technology.
At Meeting Street School, Dr. Barnes developed creative and engaging approaches for children learning to operate electric wheelchairs, including a wheelchair licensing program and competitions that helped young people build independence while enjoying the learning process. Though she no longer practices physical therapy, she remains a PT to this day.
During her Marquis Who's Who interview, Dr. Barnes reminisced that her focus has always been about helping people achieve their dreams. She said that what makes her proudest is not one single title or achievement, but the positive impact she has had on countless individuals over more than 30 years as both a physical therapist and educator. Her work has helped students persist, children develop independence and institutions strengthen their support systems.
Dr. Barnes' contributions have been recognized through numerous honors, including Endicott College service awards for 10, 15, 20 and 25 years. She has received the Women of Impact Award, the Bright Light Award, the Excellence in Teaching Award, and outstanding service awards from both the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy and RESNA.
Additionally, she has remained civically engaged through board and volunteer service with organizations including IYRS School of Technology & Trades, Cummings Foundation, InnoVenture Labs Inc., Beverly Main Streets and the North Shore Chamber of Commerce. She also earned recognition through Marquis Who's Who in America.
"Dr. Kathleen Barnes exemplifies the caliber of educator and health care leader Marquis Who's Who is proud to chronicle," the editorial team stated. "Her work in pediatric physical therapy, higher education leadership and student success reflects a career defined by compassion, innovation and lasting impact."
Dr. Barnes attributes her success to the support and belief of her family, especially her husband, Gene F. Barnes III, as well as to grit, perseverance and resiliency. Looking ahead, she intends to continue making a positive impact through education, consulting and meaningful time with family and friends.
