About Mr. Alejandro Ruiz Gonzalez
Mr. Gonzalez was born and raised in Mexico. When he graduated from high school, he decided to move to the United States because of the lack of opportunities in his home country. His goal was to find a job and obtain a higher education, but he didn't have a support system to help him. Instead, he worked seven days a week and never had the opportunity to further his education.
Throughout his life, Mr. Gonzalez has always worked hard and is committed to learning new skills to expand his opportunities. His family instilled in him a strong work ethic and taught him the value of honesty, traits that he has embraced in both his personal and professional life.
"I try to learn many skills. My dad was a welder in Mexico and he showed me how to work with welding and do many other things," Mr. Gonzalez says.
In 2001, after Mr. Gonzalez married, he was living and working in Florida as a construction worker at the time. During this time, he faced an unfortunate situation that displaced him and his pregnant wife from their home, causing them to have to start over again.
Mr. Gonzalez had never had the opportunity to pursue higher education due to his heavy workload and family responsibilities. However, he did have determination and the skills learned while working in Florida. He and his family moved to Kentucky and started over from scratch. It was clear to him that he needed to learn more skills to expand his opportunities. He worked in both roofing and tobacco farming until he made his next big step in his career.
Finding Entrepreneurial Success
When growing up in Mexico, Mr. Gonzalez's mother ran a grocery store. After working in construction and other jobs in Kentucky, he decided to use the experience he had gained at his mother's grocery store and founded his own grocery store, Supermercado Guanajuato, in 2007. He applied all the lessons he had learned throughout his previous career in construction and other jobs to his new role as a business owner and dedicated himself to learning more.
Mr. Gonzalez not only ran every department in the grocery store, but also opened a restaurant the following year. He credits his hands-on approach for teaching him the "intricacies of the business" and enabling him to give his customers the best service.
Over the years, Mr. Gonzalez has launched additional entrepreneurial ventures, including Abastos Wholesale, a wholesale company. His vision for the future includes establishing a larger warehouse on the U.S. side of the United States-Mexico border. This is part of his plan to expand the supply chain to import groceries and vegetables from Mexico to meet the growing demand for Hispanic groceries. "I will always continue working to my utmost best as my community is one of my biggest inspirations to continue growing and expanding my business, in hopes that everyone finds a piece of home," Mr. Gonzalez says.
