Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can effectively and rapidly incapacitate an offender and de-escalate a potentially precarious situation

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY / ACCESSWIRE / February 10, 2021 / Former U.S Army Commander and current Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Professional Life Coach, Nicholas Gerace has published a feature article on Medium.com, in which he calls upon federal agents and law enforcement officers to receive training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a modern martial arts discipline with ancient roots. It uses the principles of angles, pressure, leverage, timing and balance, while integrating a deep understanding of human anatomy, in order to incapacitate an opponent without inflicting violence.

"Many people have been introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through the growing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts," commented Nicholas Gerace, who in addition to serving as a Master Life Coach is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach for beginners, children and teens, as well as a fitness consultant and bodybuilding coach. "However, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not just about grappling and submission holds. It is a way of life and a code of conduct that sharpens the mind, challenges every aspect of the physical body, builds integrity, honor and character, and there is always something new to learn and strive to master. Practicing the art is a form of meditation in itself as it trains one's concentration and singleness of mind."

While all of these benefits are certainly appealing to law enforcement officials, what matters most to them in a professional capacity is that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can effectively and rapidly incapacitate an offender and de-escalate a potentially precarious situation - yet in a manner that is essentially non-violent, and therefore stays within the Use of Force framework.

"Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu empowers law enforcement officials with total control on whether and how quickly they want to dial up the intensity," commented Nicholas Gerace, who has a B.A. in Sociology from the State University of New York, and an A.A.S. in Criminal Justice from Hudson Valley Community College. "For example, law enforcement officials can apply fundamental holds in an attempt to immobilize an offender. If this attempt is not successful - which is unlikely given the remarkably effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - then law enforcement officials can escalate their tactics until the offender is secured and the threat is neutralized. And it cannot be stressed enough that while Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is incredibly potent, it is inherently non-violent. For this reason, many people including myself consider Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to be the world's best and most realistic Martial Art form. It is known as the gentle art."

Another important aspect of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that training is accessible to everyone; not just those who may be physically gifted, or have spent thousands of hours in the gym. The art from is based on leverage and technique over muscle and strength.
