As LaLand noted, most Americans have never heard about the compelling rescue of the besieged U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia.
"It was December of 1990 when the Somalian government was close to being overthrown by three rebel groups in which one was led by warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid," he said, adding that the violent civil war in Mogadishu suddenly erupted into massive urban combat.
The Somali government was in the final stages of complete collapse and the President went into hiding, LaLand noted. The civil war was quickly becoming out of control as armed bands roamed the streets, looting and robbing everything in sight.
"The U.S. Embassy suddenly became the target as renegade soldiers who placed ladders on the U.S. Embassy compound walls were preparing to assault," LaLand said.
LaLand has a very personal reason for creating "U.S. Embassy Under Siege." On January 5, 1991, just two weeks before Operation Desert Storm began, he was a member of a 60-man ground rescue force that was inserted into the blockaded U.S. Embassy.
"The mission codenamed Operation Eastern Exit, resulted in the rescue of 281 men, women, and children from over 30 countries, who were trapped in the middle of a bloody civil war with no way to escape," LaLand said.
In order to help pay for the massive production costs associated with making this compelling documentary, LaLand recently launched a fundraiser on Indiegogo. He hopes to raise $150,000 through crowdfunding to pay for the narration, editing, sound audio, travel and other costs associated with producing the film.
"I am dedicated to making this captivating documentary, where you will hear the stories of the American diplomats who were there and the Marines of the rescue task force," LaLand said.
