While in Ethiopia in 2019, Formentini received word that her 21-year-old son had died by suicide on the other side of the world. A stranger stood at her side for the entire day, holding her hand as she prepared for her trip halfway around the globe. "He was a beacon in my darkest hour," Formentini adds. When she expressed gratitude for his kindness, the stranger declined, saying that caring for her was his "human responsibility."
