OTTAWA, ONT., October 11, 2011 - A strong turnout at two veterinarian stem cell knowledge sessions held recently in Montreal, Que. and Ottawa, Ont. has resulted in over 50 more small animal and horse veterinarians in Canada trained and accredited to perform VetStem RC Regenerative Cell Therapy on patients.

"The wet labs and credentialing courses provide veterinarians with the knowledge necessary to perform VetStem RC Regenerative Cell Therapy treatments on companion animals," says Charlotte Foster, Avivagen Animal Health sales and marketing director. "After speaking with many veterinarians in attendance at the course, they were thinking of clients who would benefit from the therapy."

Dr. Charles Bruce, small animal surgeon at the Alta Vista Animal Hospital in Ottawa has been using VetStem RC Regenerative Cells at the clinic.

"We have been using the VetStem RC Regenerative Cells therapy to treat arthritic joints in dogs that have become intolerant to medications or don't tolerate traditional medications and as part of a multi-modal approach," he says. "It has also been extremely successful in dogs with tendon ruptures. The therapy has provided increased mobility, activity levels and comfort for my patients, and medication levels have gone down."

Dr. Bruce says he believes the therapy will become more popular in the future for arthritic animals and to treat systemic auto-immune diseases in dogs and cats.

Dr. Anthony Kahn, veterinarian at Centre Vétérinaire Laval in Laval, Que. attended the Montreal VetStem RC credentialing course and found it beneficial.

"The course was very informative and gave me a better sense of what cases would be appropriate for this therapy as well as the advantages of stem cells derived from adipose tissue," he notes. "We see patients with advanced degenerative orthopedic diseases such as osteoarthritis in our practice. I have been recommending the therapy for these types of cases."

VetStem RC Regenerative Cell Therapy is scientifically proven for treatment of arthritic conditions, and joint and ligament injuries in dogs, cats and horses. The therapy uses regenerative cells derived from an animal's own fat tissue. A small amount of fat tissue is extracted by the patient's veterinarian and then couriered to Avivagen Animal Health's new, state-of-the-art, Canadian laboratory facility in Prince Edward Island. The cells are processed and counted, following stringent sterility and quality assurance guidelines. The number of cells required for the immediate treatment are then returned to the veterinarian for injection into the patient, often within 48 hours of extraction. Extra cells are stored by Avivagen Animal Health for future treatments if the animal has a later need of treatment.
