UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESSWIRE / November 27, 2024 / Marquis Who's Who honors Robert T. Slater III, MD, MPH, ABFM, ABOIM, for furthering medical education through curricula. Dr. Slater is a medical professor and educator, currently serving as an associate professor at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine in San Antonio, Texas. In this role, he is responsible for developing the curriculum, selecting topics for study and creating the schedule. The clinical training he administers encompasses medical interviewing, communication, documentation, physical examination, clinical reasoning and simulation practices during the first two years of medical school. Dr. Slater teaches full-time for a program with 160 medical students each year, training them before they begin their clinical clerkship rotations.

Pursuing Medicine with a Desire to Help Others

Dr. Slater initially became interested in pursuing a career in medicine after taking the Myers-Briggs personality test, alongside several other interest tests, all of which suggested that medicine would be the best fit for him. Pre-medical courses and clinical shadowing, coupled with a genuine desire to help others, affirmed Dr. Slater's calling towards the medical profession as the most effective way for him to contribute positively to society.

Dr. Slater began his higher education by earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with pre-medical prerequisites from The University of Texas at Austin in 2008. He then transitioned into serving as a patient care coordinator at MD Pediatrics in 2009 prior to enrolling at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 2009 to 2013, where he became a Doctor of Medicine. He went on to earn a Master of Public Health from the same school in 2016 while serving as a resident physician in the Memorial Hermann Family Medicine Residency Program in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Slater is also certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Integrative Medicine to practice family medicine and integrative medicine, respectively.

A Varied Professional Career

Following his education, Dr. Slater served as an integrative and behavioral medicine fellow and clinical instructor at The University of Texas Medical Branch from 2016 to 2017 before moving on to act as an attending physician and clinical assistant professor at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas from 2017 to 2019. Deciding to place greater emphasis on his educational role, Dr. Slater became an adjunct clinical assistant professor at The University of Texas Medical Branch from 2019 to 2022 while transitioning to full-time education as an assistant professor at the University of the Incarnate Word from 2019 to 2023, then an associate professor ever since.

Memberships and Civic Contributions

Dr. Slater is also involved with the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners as a reviewer and developer for all three Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examinations, and with the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) as a founding faculty member and course director. In addition, he serves as a Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group Advisor for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and is a key member of the Integrative Medicine Interest Group of the American Academy of Family Physicians. These memberships further demonstrate his ongoing commitment to medical education.

Outside of professional work, Dr. Slater volunteers as an advisor for the University of the Incarnate Word's Community Garden, Medical Students for a Sustainable Future, the AIHM Student Alliance, and the Food as Medicine student group.

Advancing Medical Education

Looking to the future, Dr. Slater plans to further develop the initiatives established at the University of the Incarnate Word, continue to train integrative health professionals, and emphasize lifestyle and integrative medicine on national board exams with the goal of transitioning medical curricula toward health promotion and disease prevention worldwide. Above all, Dr. Slater is committed to furthering medical education to improve patient care by example.
