During the interview, Dr. Oded Bahat, whose practice is based in Beverly Hills, California, discussed how adult craniofacial changes require proper implant planning. Those who wish to connect with Oded Bahat are welcome to visit his LinkedIn profile.

As Dr. Bahat noted during the interview conducted by Dr. Richard Sullivan, Vice President of Clinical Technologies at Nobel Biocare, he believes that analyzing the entire face is crucial to support a treatment plan that includes extensive reconstruction. This careful study helps him determine the possibilities for future esthetics.

"This analysis has always been based on conditions as they present, which is a moment in time," Dr. Bahat noted, adding that when planning for implants to support a restoration, periodontists, surgeons and dentists typically proceeded with the assumption of a more or less static relationship of implants relative to oral structures and teeth in both jaws.

"Now we are more aware that this is not true in most cases. Neither is it always clinically significant."

The discussion with Dr. Richard Sullivan of Nobel Biocare was not the first time that Dr. Oded Bahat has been asked to share his professional opinion about dental implants and periodontics; in a recent interview with FiveHundo.com, he explained how correct diagnosis is key to the proper treatment.

When asked what advice he has to offer readers based on his findings, Dr. Oded Bahat said the patients who have already been treated and the clinicians can only see the effects-not the changes as they are occurring.

"Most importantly, when implants and teeth are within the same arch, occlusion must be checked routinely for unequal or unfavorable changes that dictate some corrective action," he said.

For patients who are waiting to be treated, Dr. Bahat advises learning more about and anticipating the potential vectors of future changes and to incorporate this data into the augmentation procedures, 3-dimensional implant positioning and restorative designs.

"Emphasize for every patient and co-treating dentist the necessity of routine occlusal assessment and arch integrity to protect the patient from changes before they become harmful," he said.
